Last month Allergan, the makers of Botox and Juvederm, received cosmetic approval for a topical therapy  that enhances eyelash growth.  The medication is called Bimatoprost (the trade name will be Latisse). Bimatoprost has been used by ophthalmologists since 2001 for the treatment of glaucoma.  It is a class of medication called a prostaglandin which is present throughout the body.  Patients who were treated for glaucoma noticed that they were growing longer, fuller eyelashes.  This prompted Allergan to conduct clinical trials for a cosmetic indication, which was approved by the FDA last month.  Latisse will be available this Spring in our office.
