Perioral Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a mechanical form of skin resurfacing. Dermabrasion is performed to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that are associated with aging. Dermabrasion can be performed on the entire face or in specific regions to improve wrinkles, lines, and/or scars.
Wrinkles or lines around the mouth, sometimes known as lipstick lines or perioral rhytids, develop as early as in the 3rd decade. In addition to genetic influences, external factors such as smoking and sun exposure contribute to the deepening of these lines. Perioral dermabrasion is performed to significantly improve the appearance of wrinkles and lines that develop around your mouth.
This patient had perioral dermabrasion performed to treat the deep wrinkles around her mouth.
Goals To improve the appearance of the deep lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
The Procedure The treatment area is mapped out to the desired area of effect. The dermabrader instrument is used to resurface the skin to the desired level of skin treatment. In addition to the immediately visible results, skin collagen remodeling is stimulated and will occur over the following 6 months.
Anesthesia Perioral dermabrasion can be performed under local anesthesia in the comfort of our office procedure room. It is often combined with other skin resurfacing procedures or other surgical procedures.
Length of Time The procedure takes approximately one hour to complete. Other procedures, such as a facelift or laser skin treatment, may be combined with perioral dermabrasion, and may be recommended after a detailed consultation with Dr. Steiger.
After the Procedure When performed as an isolated procedure, you may go home after your perioral dermabrasion. You will be taught how to take care of the treated area while it is healing.
Recovery The area around your mouth will be healing for the next 7-10 days. Most people do not complain of any pain. Detailed care instruction will be givent to you by our caring staff. Following Dr. Steiger's instructions will help assure the best possible recovery and results.
NO. They are completely different. Microdermabrasion is performed by an aesthetician in order to remove the most superficial layer of dead skin cells that reside on your face. Microdermabrasion is akin to a very superficial polish of the skin. Microdermabrasion will not help the lines around your mouth.
Dermabrasion is performed by a physician experienced in the procedure. Using a trained eye and skilled hand, the physician will remove many layers of skin to penetrate the skin's deepest layers. This results in the removal of wrinkles/lines in addition to stimulation of collagen production by your own skin.
Our patients rarely experience any pain after the procedure. If there is any discomfort it is alleviated with over the counter Tylenol.
The skin is completely healed in about 1 week. At this point you will notice an improvement in your appearance. This will gradually improve as the body builds new collagen stimulated by the procedure.
Perioral dermabrasion achieves permanent results after all the swelling subsides.
Most of our patients elect ot have this done in the comfort of our procedure room under local anesthetic. It can also be performed in the operating room, especially when being combined wth other surgical procedures.
Perioral rhytids are located on the surfcae of the skin. Today's available fillers do not adequately treat these types of lines. In fact, we see many patients who are unhappy with the results of fillers in this specific region. In addition, fillers used to treat this area can distort the lip and smile. This can lead to a very unnatural look that Dr. Steiger avoids.
Yes. In the less severe cases of perioral rhytids, Botox and Dysport can be helpful in improving the appearance of your mouth.
