Neck Lift
A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to restore a blunted/redundant neck (double chin) to a more youthful state. A neck lift can be performed alone, but is often performed in conjunction with a face lift. However, certain people may not want or need a facelift, and a necklift alone may be suitable for them.
There are several methods for correcting a sagging neck . Often times these methods are combined to achieve optimal results. Neck liposuction removes excess neck fat, while a neck lift is performed to tighten the deeper neck muscles and remove excess skin. During your detailed consultation, Dr. Steiger will determine the best method for improving your neck.
Goals To improve the appearance of a blunted neck.
The Procedure The procedure will vary based upon your anatomy and the cause of your neck laxity. Typically, the deeper neck muscles are tightened, and extra skin and fat is removed from the neck. All of the incisions are placed around your ear, hairline, and chin crease in order to camouflage them. The incisions for neck liposuction alone are small and hidden within these same regions.
Anesthesia Deep sedation/twilight sleep is preferred, however some patients opt for a general anesthetic.
Length of Time A necklift takes approximately 2 hours to perform, depending upon the amount of work required. It is performed in a state of the art, fully accredited outpatient surgical facility or at the hospital. Other procedures can be combined with a necklift, and may be recommended after a detailed consultation with Dr. Steiger.
After the Procedure Most patients go home comfortably on the same day and are cared for by their family and/or friends. Professional in-home nursing care is available upon request. Overnight suites with professional nursing care are also available. Our friendly staff will assist you in coordinating these services upon request.
Recovery Recovery time ranges between 1-2 weeks. Depending on your type of work, you may return as early as 1 week. Full, strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 2 weeks after the procedure. Bruising can occur after surgery, which may be camouflaged with makeup. This generally resolves after 2 weeks. Most patients do not experience any real pain after surgery, but describe a discomfort from the feeling of tightness. We will prescribe analgesics to help alleviate this.
Paients commonly request an improvemnt in their "double chin" or "falling neck." A neck lift is performed to correct this and restore a more youtful contour to the neck.
There are several anatomical causes for a falling neck. In younger people, excess fullness of the neck may be caused by excess fat alone. In these cases, neck liposuction or direct excision of neck fat is performed to improve neck contour.
Commonly, neck redundancy is also caused by a "falling" of the deep neck tissues and excess skin laxity. In these patients, the neck musculature is tightened, and extra skin is removed in order to a restore more youthful neck contour.
All of the incisions are placed in strategic areas so that they are camouflaged and not noticeable.
